Project Description

Located in the heart of Montreal, Place Des Nations was once a large-scale active outdoor amphitheater built for the World Expo in 1967 but has since fallen into near abandonment. Cloudscape intends to restore public excitement into the existing historic amphitheater by transforming it into a vibrant performance and community space. Taking advantage of the lightness of steel, the proposal features a large-scale steel space truss supported by four sculptural steel columns, giving it a floating appearance. The canopy is then equipped to improve the current conditions of the park through its integrated systems. With new programming and comfort systems injected into the amphitheater, Cloudscape aims to create a landmark in Montreal which not only embraces its historical space - but regenerates it for community use.

Regeneration

Cloudscape aims to restore public excitement into the amphitheater through a distinct and large scale intervention.

Abandonment

The venue has since fallen into near abandonment through public neglect and boredom.

Jury Response

“The jury panel found this project to be the clear winner of the competition. The bold vision to create an ‘iconic’ project that showcased steel’s ability to support long spans and creative non-linear shapes was inspiring to the panel. The elaborate and well resolved steel details showed a comprehension of steel construction, expressed in an elegant way, making this proposal realistic and buildable.”

A Comfortable Canopy

The steel canopy of Cloudscape aims to create a comfortable and welcoming space for the community. It provides a place to relax, socialize, and enjoy the park, regardless of the weather or performance schedule.

A Bold Refreshment

The original concrete design proposal held a heavy emphasis on "freedom from the symmetry of the classical amphitheater". Recognizing the declining nature of the existing ampatheatre, cloudscapes design chooses to oppose the existing site in hopes of rebuilding excitement into the area. A foreign-like canopy is used in order to do this with opposing characteristics such as the symetrical shape and light materials.

A Playfull and Community Based Performance

The water fountain performance incorporated into the steel canopy adds a dynamic element to the proposal, creating a refreshing respite from the outdoor heat while encouraging community engagement at its center.

A Fully Loaded Large Scale Spectacle

The undulating steel space truss structure above the stage illuminates with the equipped lighting equipment and creates a visually stunning backdrop that provides a dramatic and dynamic setting for performances.
